Impact of differential item functioning on group score reporting in the context of large-scale assessments

Abstract We investigated the potential impact of differential item functioning (DIF) on group-level mean and standard deviation estimates using empirical simulated data in context large-scale assessment. For investigation, PISA 2018 cognitive domains (Reading, Mathematics, Science) were analyzed Jackknife sampling to explore DIF country scores their errors. found that countries have a large number items tend increase difference computed with without adjustment. In addition, errors score differences also increased items. simulation study, we evaluated bias root squared error (RMSE) group multigroup response theory (IRT) model extent which create how effectively adjustment corrects under various conditions. reduced by 50% average. The implications limitations study are further discussed.
